Slavko Janevski (1920-2000)

poet, novelist, short-story writer, translator, and painter. He was the founder and editor of several literary magazines in Skopje. He was an editor-in-chief of the publishing house "Makedonska kniga" in Skopje. He is the author of the first novel in modern Macedonian, Selo zad sedumte jaseni (The Village Beyond the Seven Ash-Trees), 1952. Selections of his poetry and prose have been published in many languages abroad. Included in all anthologies of modern Macedonian literature. Has translated several books of poetry by Russian, Serbian and Slovenian authors. Awards: (domestic) – Brakja Miladinovci, Kocho Racin, Racinovo priznanie, 11 Oktomvri, Misla, Makedonsko slovo; (abroad) – AVNOJ (former Yugoslavia), Miroslav Krlezha (Croatia).
